The Department of Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology is one of the four departments in the Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The department teaches dental students, conduct research, and provides clinical services to the university community and its environs. It has two teaching units:

 

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - that teaches the year 6 students [U1] about the theoretical principles and the management of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. They also acquire clinical skill for history taking, conducting physical examination, making diagnosis and planning treatment. The students also provide clinical care for patients under supervision.

 

Oral Pathology – that teach the year 5 students to identify the macroscopic and microscopic features of the human diseases with special emphasis on the mouth, face, jaws and neck.

 

The laboratory and clinical programme of the department are designed in conjunction with the other departments in the Faculties of Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences, to produce dental graduates that can address national, regional and global oral health needs.
