The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology is one of the four departments of the faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The department mainly train undergraduate students in dentistry. It has two units;


Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - that teach the students (years two, four and six) the normal structures, development and function of the human body and mind with special emphasis on the face and the masticatory apparatus. The clinical dental students (years four and six) are taught the theoretical principles and the management of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the mouth. They are also exposed to the clinical skill of history taking, conducting sound physical examination, making correct diagnosis and involved in the necessary treatments in the order of importance in a timely manner under strict supervision.
Oral Pathology – that teach the students to identify the macroscopic and microscopic nature of the various human diseases with special emphasis on the mouth, face, jaws and neck.
The department apart from teaching students is also involved in various research activities and renders clinical services to the university community and its environs.
Philosophy of the Department
The academic, laboratory and clinical programme of the department are designed in conjunction with the other departments in the faculties of Dentistry, Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences to produce outstanding and world-class dental graduates.
Courses that are taught:
Part II B.CH.D
CHD201 – Oral Anatomy
The course consists of gross anatomy, embryology and histology of the oral and dental tissues as well as head and neck region.
CHD202 – Oral Physiology
This is a combined lecture and laboratory course on physiology and biochemistry of the teeth, facial muscles, salivary gland and human saliva
Part IV B.CH.D
CHD407 – Introduction to Oral Surgery
This is a combined lecture and clinical exposure in the basic principles of surgical treatment of the diseases of the jaws, oral cavity, face and Para-oral tissues. The course offers the students the ability to carry out effective minor oral surgical procedures for relevant dental and oro-facial disorders
